werner decoy Frank Werner, master carver of hunting decoys, is the Artist of the Month in July at St. Maries Art Gallery, 704 Main. Frank's photography and carved decoys will be on display. The waterfowl decoys will be both fully finished and in different stages of completion to show the various stages of the carving technique. Werner has received two ICA Visual Arts Fellowships and the Idaho Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. He teaches decoy making as a Master Artist through the Idaho Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program.

PJ Destiny PJ Destiny, south Lake Coeur d'Alene's talented one-man band performs danceable classics at the Coeur d'Alene Casino Nighthawk Lounge in Worley, ID every Thursday beginning at 9 p.m. He will also play in the Nighthawk Lounge after the Miranda Lambert concert (see below).

Record-Breaking Skinny Dip Attempt

If you'd like to participate in this national event at a place where you're not likely to be arrested, check out the Biggest Skinny Dip2nd Annual Skin to the Wind Festival of Fun at Sun Meadow Resort July 9 to 12 near Worley, Idaho. A highlight this year will be an attempt to break the Guiness Book of World Records largest skinny dip ever in North America. The American Association for Nude Recreation is coordinating the record-setting event and the folks gathered at Sun Meadow will do their part Saturday July 11 at high noon. The public is invited to participate in this event nationwide. Rules require all participants to be completely nude to be counted. First time skinny-dippers are welcome and shyness will be accommodated, hosts at Sun Meadow say. "Skinny-dipping is a wholesome tradition as old as mankind and frequently honored in art and movies. It celebrates the natural joy of plunging into water without hindrance of clothing."

Rob QuistRob Quist will appear in concert at Sun Meadow Resort Thursday, July 9 at 8 p.m. as part of the 2nd Annual Skin to the Wind Festival of Fun. Rob's original music tells tales about people and history of Montana and the West. He has shared the stage with many musical greats including, Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, Dolly Parton, Heart, and The Allman Brothers to name a few.

The public is invited to a presentation by Mike Elwell, a local crafter of classical guitars July 9 at 6 p.m. at the Tensed/DeSmet Community Library. Elwell will provide a demonstration of his craft and a classical guitarist will play several pieces on the handcrafted instruments.

Gotham City is having a reunion show at Carlin Bay Marina on Hwy. 97, July 10 & 11, 8:30 p.m. to 12:30. The Jam Band was formerly scheduled for this date. Look for them again on Sunday between 4 and 8 p.m.

PJ Destiny, will appear at the Landing in Harrison, Idaho July 11 from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Escape to the south end of the lake this weekend

It's all about art and local culture this weekend along the south Lake Coeur d'Alene loop. Head south on Hwy 95 to the stellar Indian Art Show & Auction at the Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort on July 16 and 17 in Worley, where the rich and enchanting works of contemporary Native American fine artists will be displayed and sold, along with story telling, demonstrations and an Indian regalia fashion show.

photo courtesey Museum of North IdahoThe Honoring Our Ancestors photo exhibit will debut July 17 & 18 at the Golden Era Antique & Art Show. It includes photos from the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation and the tribe's ancestral homeland from the late 1800s, and many from the 1910 - 1920s. The exhibit is a cooperative project of One Sky North Idaho, several tribal members, Golden Era Antiques and South Lake Promotions to observe 2009 as the 100th year since the reservation was opened to settlement under the federal Allotment Act. An entry fee of $5 (discounts for seniors, kids and groups) includes the photo exhibit, live music, art and antique show and a horse drawn wagon ride from the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes trailhead in Plummer.

Antiques, Art & More Outdoors at Golden Era

Celebrate the good old days surrounded by collectibles, antiques, fine art, folk art, entertainment and food at the relaxing outdoor setting at Golden Era's Antique & Art Show July 17 and 18 along Hwy 95 one mile north of Plummer, Idaho, and 10 miles south of the Coeur d'Alene Casino.

If you missed the casino's art show and auction, you can still catch contemporary Native American fine artists George Flett, George Hill and Neil Parsons here, along with a mix of local artisans, writers, entertainers and Northwest antique collectors.

Cary FlyThe show opens Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. for early bird antique hunters and anyone who wants to browse the booths, get a bite to eat and enjoy the music of the Coeur d'Alene tribal Rose Creek Singers, a talented local drum group. The gates open again Saturday at 9 a.m. when Moore Country will perform. In the afternoon, take in a solo performance by Inland Empire blues musician Cary Fly. You can arrive at this art show by boat, or if you're driving the loop, look for the SR-5 turnoff from Hwy 95 in Plummer and head east for a scenic 20-mile drive to the 20th Anniversary smART Festival of the Arts on the Shadowy St. Joe River at Cherry Bend Boat Park near St. Maries, July 18 -19. This year's theme is 'Celebration of the World.' The juried show features art, music, theater, dance and food with art booths opening 9 a.m. Saturday.

On July 18 at 11 a.m. the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Rose Creek Singers will start off the smART weekend of events. Roberson, Beese & Flores play blues Saturday at noon. At 1 p.m. it's roots/world music with Dayan Kai. See classic rock performer PJ Destiny at 2 p.m. Tom McCormick will tell stories at 3:30 p.m.

Sunday morning, enjoy folk music by LG Senelly. PJ Destiny plays classic rock at 11 a.m. Get your groove on at noon with All That Jazz. Hear horn driven electric rock with Locust Street Taxi in the afternoon.

If you've never spent a charming summer's eve dancing on the deck of Conkling Marina, overlooking south Lake Coeur d'Alene, why not try it this weekend when The Perones perform from 6 to 10 p.m.

Or how about a relaxing drive north from St. Maries along the Coeur d'Alene Scenic Byway? Be sure to stop in Harrison where theThe Culprits play at One Shots July 17 and 18, or check out the cozy dining in the grotto.

St. Maries Ink invites aspiring writers to come to the St. Maries Library on the first and third Friday of each month between noon and 1:30 to write together, share their work and discuss the craft. You may bring an original short story or poem to read to the group.

It doesn't hurt to call and confirm showtimes, restaurant hours, etc. before heading to the south end of the lake.
